Wicked Autumn A Max Tudor Novel eBook G M Malliet

This is an engaging read filled with character studies of the English villagers of an idyllic town after a murder; the victim is a woman active in raising money for charity. The story unfolds from the point-of-view of the vicar, a former member of MI5. Most of the novel is well-written, but then near the end, after the murder mystery has been solved, the point at which the story should have ended, there are two chapters so badly written--one with a conversation between the vicar and the police investigator--that it feels as though Malliet's editor or agent made her tack it on. The chapter with the conversation includes details that repeat and/or absolutely contradict what appeared in the story previously when the vicar was interviewing each of his parishioners in turn. I would recommend that you skip the last two chapters of the book that read as though they were written by somebody other than the author.

Wicked Autumn A Max Tudor Novel eBook G M Malliet Reviews

A stumbled upon this series which was requested by my best friend. She said since I am an Anglican and I love British cozies she thought I would like it. I am hooked! I love the concept of a priest who is a former M5 agent and solves crimes. I thoroughly enjoy the description of the town and the characters in the village. Can't wait to order more Max Tudor tales.
This was a debut novel set in a lovely fictional village in England. The map was beautifully drawn by Rhys Davies, another excellent author and just by scanning it, you get the sense of the persons that will reside within our "Nether Monkslip."

Max Tudor, and Anglican priest had a prior life as an MI5 agent. He finds his skills are slightly rusty when the pillar of the Women's Institute is felled during the annual Harvest Fair. Wanda Batton-Smythe feels that the village needs her direction in order to make the Harvest Fair a success. In part she is correct, the other part is she is a dictator that enjoys ruling.

Murder comes silently with almost no ripples felt. Everyone had had run-ins with Ms. Wanda but finding friends? That is a problem.

I did not see the killer coming until the person was revealed. It made total sense but kept off my radar. I will be hoping for the next book to come shortly.
"Wicked Autumn" by G.M. Malliet is another Christie like whodunit with a large cast of eccentric characters and a great deal of humor. I loved this story featuring Max Tudor, the village Vicar and exMI5 investigator. The story was a bit longer than it needed to be, maybe 50 pages, but it's still a titillating, complex storyline with a considerable amount of misdirection and clues. The ending is simply wonderful as always from this author who has an extraordinary knack for spinning entertaining tales. If you are a Christie fan I believe you will like her modern day surrogate. Pure entertainment so pull up a chair, pull a blankie over yourself, and immerse yourself in this wonderful mystery. 3.5 stars!!!
I selected this book because the author is an Agatha Award winner and it was blurbed by one of my favorite writers (Louise Penny.) Plus, I figured that since G.M. Malliet attended Oxford University and Cambridge, she'd be good at writing about an English village. Maybe because Malliet is American, but it seemed to me that she was trying too hard to seem British? As I read "Wicked Autumn" I felt that she had loaded up this cozy mystery with every British cliché under the sun.
This was not as good as I had hoped it to be. I am only giving it 2 stars, which I usually do not do.

The book kept my interest, but I felt that it was too much information for one novel! Max was a likable MC, but it had too much talk about MI5, his first career in life.

It took too long to find a dead person and I almost gave up on the book. But I persisted and it did get better.

But all in all, it took way to long to get to the person who dun it! Thanks to Max the police were able to find the killer, but if not for Max, they would still be looking for him, in other books in the series
I would have liked to give it a 3 1/2 stars, but I give it the benefit of the doubt and I think the series has a lot of potential. The main character, Max Tudor, is where the potential lies. I get the feeling that he has an interesting story to tell. We get bits and pieces of it as the story progresses. We find that he used to be an MI5 agent and he flashes back to earlier times as things remind him of that past. I look forward to the next books in the series because he sounds like an interesting person...how many special agents leave and go into the religious field as a vicar in a small village? What is he running from? The hangup for me becomes the long list of other characters...19 people! At first I kept up, but as more and more people (mostly women) appeared, I lost track of who was who. There is a List of Characters at the end of the story, but I didn't find it until I had finished the book! It would have helped more if it were at the front of the story. Also, since I was reading the book on a , flipping back and forth was not easy for me. Most of the characters were not memorable enough, except for Wanda, the control freak. I had to look back to refresh my memory (that's where the List would have helped me). I missed some early clues which as a long time mystery reader I should not have missed. My attention was directed at the wrong person until the very end. I think it would have been better reading for me if there had not been so many characters to remember. Nevertheless, I do recommend the book and look forward to the next book in the series because of the main character, Max Tudor.
