Discovering the killer is the easy part … but can Cordelia bring them to justice? Politicians tend to have more enemies than friends, so when one of Sir Robert Peel’s more radical Tories is poisoned, the list of suspects is long. Those suspects have money and power. It keeps them out of jail. But someone must pay the price and it’s the daughter of Cordelia’s butler who is arrested and charged. Cordelia vows to stop this miscarriage of justice. But she is too rich to go into the lowest parts of Victorian London, too female to go into the clubs and coffee houses, and too scandalous to go to the parties and balls. She has to rely on help, and not just from her unconventional household staff. Because Hugo Hawke has rolled back into her life. He’s a cad, he’s a bounder, and he’s still angry about how she beat him in a wager. Can she bring the killer to justice before Hugo wrecks her chances – and before an innocent young girl hangs for it? This novel contains innuendo but no graphic scenes and may be considered “clean” and suitable for all readers. It’s a light and frothy read that keeps to the “fun” side of history.

In The House Of Secrets And Lies Lady C Investigates Volume 3 Issy Brooke Books

At the onset of the book Cordelia has returned to the south of England and her home of Clarfields, but is planning an almost immediate removal to London. Her column for a magazine about regional cuisine in Great Britain has not been a great success, but she doesn’t need the money and finds doing the research for it somewhat boring compared to solving murders. And this one gets off to a strong start when her lady’s maid Ruby finds her butler Fry crying outside her dressing room. It turns out that unbeknownst to her (or anyone else in the household), Fry is married, although he and his wife have been separated for many years. They do have a daughter, however, and he’s just learned that she’d been arrested for the murder of a member of Parliament. From what little he knows of the case, the evidence against her does look damning, but he knows Cordelia has solved several murders and hopes she can do something for his offspring. Naturally she buckles down to do so, though she soon learns that a gently-bred female is quite limited in where she can go in London, so she has to enlist some helpers—and not just her household servants. I find this series quite enjoyable—not great, but pleasant and with a very decent period feel.

In The House Of Secrets And Lies Lady C Investigates Volume 3 Issy Brooke Books Reviews

Lady County is growing - in personality, skills and ego. I hope the author is having as much fun writing these tales as I am having reading them. Please continue.
An interesting new victorian series with a lady detective finding her place in society. Being a widow and female presents many obstacles. Book 3 is a wonderful read. The story line is developing nicely. Great supporting characters.
I really enjoy the Lady C mysteries. Not only are they fast paced and interesting, but they are laugh out loud funny. I get a kick out of characters.
I love reading this series. It's an easy read, but still interesting content and well written. It's a murder mystery, but it doesn't have the crudeness and foul language that so many include in a novel. Can't wait for Issy Brooke to come out with another one.
If like me you have a thing for the Victorian era, especially dealing with mystery, Lady C is for you. The author once again delivers with her strong heroine who not only has to solve a complex crime but has to fight against the morals of her time. I loved the characters, very good novel.
I really like Issy Brooke's writing. I like her characters and I like her plot. I like the way she sets the scene and describes the surroundings. Her mysteries have nice suspense in them and this book continues the development of this group of characters very nicely. I very much like the modern thoughts Lady Cordelia has and how she is willing to live in defiance of the tight rigid rules of society in her times. This is a very nice cozy mystery, fun to read.
I read for my entertainment. Lady C. Is fun to figure. You never know what she will do or say, convention be damned. She is both weak and strong, smart and foolish. If you like the English lady detectives, she is a must read. If there were only more of her in writing.
