Death by Diamonds A Vintage Magic Mystery Annette Blair Books Reviews

This is the third book in the Vintage Magic series and Annette Blair delivered another great read. I am never disappointed in the stories she writes. She is an author whose books I recommend.
This book is a good read as a stand-alone and a great follow-up to Blair's previous books. The magic element fits in nicely with the vintage clothes and a sexy ghost waiting for his now aged love is a great touch. Some of the situations seem a bit contrived but overall, a great way to spend a lazy weekend curled up with a good book,
Good series
This one started slow but then sped up. Mad got herself into several messes not only with her on again off again FUN boyfriend because of Werner but with her sleuthing and reading of old clothes. It was a good read and a good ending.
could not wait to get my hands on this book great read
I enjoyed the first two books, so I figured, "why not continue?" Oh dear, let me count the ways... um.. reasons. This book is confusing, abrupt, disjointed, illogical, distinctly un-magical, and suffers from a serious case of Perrymasonitis.

I hate reviews that tell the whole story. If you want to know the story either read the blurb or read the book. A reviewer doesn't need to retell the plot, but should use the plot, characters, setting, and writing style to critique the book via examples. So I won't be telling the story, nor will I be dropping spoilers.

The whole premise of somebody knowing so clearly she was going to die as to send an item to somebody else which actually arrives "before" the death is too odd to work. If you knew somebody was trying to kill you, wouldn't you at least call the cops? ... nah. I don't mind suspending disbelief, but this entire plot stretched those bounds like spandex on a hippo. Most of this is ridiculous and not even entertainingly ridiculous. It's all getting really old, really fast. The bumbling confusion (for no reason), the clothes/sewing-related fake swear words, the love/hate local cop connection, the on/off "love" (sex?) interest, and finally, the annoying best friend. Yes, I am over, so over, Eve. She's childish, man-hungry, one dimensional, and shallow. Who would even want a friend like her? Not only is she basically a slut, but a slut with no sense of humor and a mean streak. If your best friend had an on-going relationship with someone, you have known both of them for a long time, they're adults capable of making a decision about their relationship, and your friend actually cared a great deal about the man... would you constantly tear him down (he's not a bad guy and hasn't cheated or anything), play dirty tricks on him, threaten to call him the minute there's even a whiff of interest in another man on your best friend's part? Seriously, Eve is not a decent sidekick here, she's just plain nasty -- like weaseling her way onto a trip and then booking Maddie on completely different floors from Nick, and even kicking him in the nuts under the guise of "oops, my bad." And laughing about it. In addition, their running gags about her black only clothes are also so over. It's gettin' way way old.

A lot of this story reads as if things were edited out and the writing was never smoothed to knit the rest back together. It bounces, jars, and leaves the reader feeling left out. I keep asking myself, "why is she saying this? what's this conversation about? Huh?" This one introduces quite a few extra characters (yes, we are in NY, but no, the whole theatre world including servants can't be potential killers). Yes, vintage clothing is cool, but nobody gets hold of or wears a real (signature/photographed) Coco Chanel. Why, out of nowhere, did the local cop from Mystic show up in NYC to work on a crime that had no connection whatsoever to his jurisdiction? This "triangle" is so not working. And enough with the "visions" -- now they aren't even "working" and sincerely not the least bit magical (like the scene in the bedroom in the victim's nightgown) -- at least in the earlier books the heroine received actual usable info from the clothes, rather than stumbling around and not remembering anything that happened while she tried them on or touched them (like if she slept with someone...and that scene so didn't even come close to working).

Finally, perrymasonitis abounds -- as in the whole murder being recounted during a lengthy confrontation with the murderers in which everyone (like law enforcement) sits and listens to our heroine tell everyone what happened, and they .... Okay, I'm not going to tell you what they find or don't find... but it's all at the end like a Perry Mason trial. And.... not very surprising at that, but for the sheer gall of attempting to pretzel her way into a plot, I'm giving it one star.

Oh, and the ending... drops off like the edge of the flat earth society's Christmas cards. Really. I actually turned the page looking for more. But... nope.

I'm on the fence about the next book(s). Money, time, disappointment.... weighing all that.
"Mad, Sweetie, I always wanted you to have this. I hoped some day to give it to you myself. If you have it, I'm dead. Use your talents wisely. Love, Dom," reads the note tucked inside a package that vintage clothing store owner Maderia "Mad" Cutler receives from actress and friend Dominique "Dom" DeLong. Determined to find out who is responsible for Dom's murder -- for Dom is, indeed, dead -- and to help Dom's son, Kyle, get through the ordeal of his mother's death, Mad takes off for the scene of the crime, New York City.

The third entry in Blair's Vintage Magic Mysteries finds Mad in New York for much of the novel. There, she uncovers plenty of murder suspects Dom's current understudy; Dom's ex-husband, who may well inherit the business they jointly own; a jealous rival; Dom's personal chef, who wanted her to set him up in his own restaurant; Dom's toy boy; and just about anyone who knew about the missing diamonds Dom wore on stage.

Mad's best friend Eve Meyers clad in steampunk fashions, Mad's on-again-off-again lover sexy FBI agent Nick Jaconetti, and Detective Lytton "the Weiner" Werner, Mad's antagonistic (or is he?) grade school classmate help solve the mystery.

Dante, the resident ghost in the first two books, Chakra, Mad's cat, and Mad's father and "aunt" Fiona make brief appeances.

Mad's "talent", having psychic visions while touching or wearing other's clothing, is prominently featured and adds interest and a unique touch to the series. Also a plus are Blair's descriptions of vintage fashions and the fashion quotes that preceed each chapter. The result is an entertaining, light mystery that is a quick read.
